07:06 pm - Health stuff

Did you know that if three of your four heart bypasses clog up after a couple of years, you can't get a partial refund?
Seems reasonable to me, but the payments were for the services and had not Service Level Agreements behind them :)

Health Insurance is not like a Maintenance Agreement at all.

Well, actually there are some similarities:
- pays for covered repairs
- some repairs can only be done in shop
- emergency after hours service is more expensive

Differences:
- not all parts can be replaced.
- some repairs are off limits
- people repair pays MUCH better than computer repair

And by the way, why does medical insurance cover everything but your mouth?
I mean is the result of ancient bloody wars between the Doctors Guild and the Dentist Guild? Sounds like a peace treaty carve out.

Scene: tent on ancient battleground
"It's agreed. Both sides will retain the right to the title 'Doctor' but since your lost, it can only practice on the inside of the mouth"

01:06 am - Posting just because

Several things happening in the real world eating time from this.
My aunt who helped raise me died a couple of weeks ago. Having to handle a few things.

Just wanted to put something up here.

TiddlyWiki (http://www.tiddlyiki.com) is a rather neat idea and I've been using it for a ToDo list at the office.

More news as it develops

10:49 pm - Live poker

A Friend hosted a small no-limit hold'em tournament at his house last Thursday. Five dollar buy-in, Ten people at the first game. Nine at the second.

They paid three places. Third got their 5 back, second got 10 and First got the rest.

Finished second in the first game and fourth in the second. Broke even. Not bad for evening's entertainment.

They usually have a regular game on Sunday that I'm never in town for, but the odd Tuesday and Thursday game pop up.

He started holding the games after getting bored with the free bar games. Among the regulars they'd won 20-30 of those altogether. Bar games are free no-entry fee tourney's held to get traffic into a bar, usually with some sort of prize for first place. Tends to be a lot of real loose play. There also tend to be a few regulars who play several nights a week. A few of us used to hit these fairly often.

Sunday's some family members of mine usually show up to play some poker. Usually for no money. Gramps the monkey (see picture) sits in if we don't have enough players. He hold his own in Hold'em. We use an 8-sided dice to determine his play.
1 to 4 is a check or fold.
check if no bet, fold if someone bets
5 to 7 is a call or bet.
call any bet, if no one bet, then bet minimum
8 is raise
if limit raise, if no bet to him, he bets
if no limit, then reroll and the raise is that many times the previous raise or bet. If he opens the betting then he bet the second roll plus one times the minimum bet.

Works out pretty well. I actually played using a dice at a bar game and finished better than halfway up. So it simulates that style pretty well.

Gramps of course claims he and the other monkeys had a lot of time on their hands on the long container ship ride over from China. But then Gramps says a lot of things.

11:29 pm - Getting started

Everyone seems to have a blog these days, so I've finally been talked into starting one. Sure, sure, if my friends were jumping off a bridge, would I do it too? (Meeting them at 3:00 :) (Side note: Peer pressure always sounded like a urinal measurement to me.)

I've had "blank piece of paper in the typewriter" syndrome for a few days. You know, that odd sensation when you decide to write something, put the paper in (or fire up the word processor) and stare at the Empty Blankness(c) that seems to impose itself on your brain so that it also turns into the Empty Blankness(c). So I decided to just ramble on a bit and see where it headed. I also decided to do this a bit on the late side since that seems to be the best time to get a good ramble going.

Haven't decided if I'll pick a theme to follow for this blog or just hit whatever topic pops to mind that day.

This does give me an excuse to bug a couple of people I know who haven't updated their journal's lately. Of course, this means they might return the favor when I least want it :)
